A cross section is a picture of something that has been cut in half. You will be drawing a cross section of the Earth to show your understanding of how all these borders and convection currents work to move the tectonic plates.
You will be given a large piece of paper to use in class. Use the information from your Plate Tectonics Webquest, Plate Boundaries PowerPoint and Notes, and Convection in the Mantle Activity to help you.
Everything that should be included in your cross section drawing is located in the table below.
Make sure to LABEL EVERYTHING. Label the layers, label the boundaries, use the vocab for labels. Everything must have a label. To get the point for the item below you must have drawn it correct and LABELED IT!
EARTH LAYERS | CONVERGENT BOUNDARIES | DIVERGENT BOUNDARIES | TRANSFORM BOUNDARY |
Crust (1 pt) | Continental to Continental (1 pt) | Oceanic to Oceanic (1 pt) | Continental to Continental (1 pt) |
Mantle (1 pt) | Continental to Oceanic (1 pt) | Continental to Continental ( 1pt) | |
Outer Core (1 pt) / Inner Core (1 pt) | (Include arrows to show direction of the plates.) – (2 pts) | (Include arrows to show direction of the plates.) – (2 pts) | (Include arrows to show direction of the plates.) – (1 Pt) |
Vocab for labels: Convection Current (include arrows to show the direction of the current)(1 pt – must have all currents labeled for point). There should be a current for EVERY plate. Hotspot (1 pt) – remember this is in the middle of a plate. | Vocab for labels: Mountains/Folded Rock (1 pt) Deep Ocean Trench (1pt) Subduction Zone (1 pt) Volcano (1 pt) | Vocab for labels: Mid-Ocean Ridge (1 pt) Sea-Floor Spreading (1 pt) Magma (1 pt) Rift Valley (1 pt) | Vocab for labels: Fault – (1 Pt) |
Submission Directions: When you are finished with the drawing, take a picture and submit it to this assignment.
Grading Info:
Standard being assessed: 6-8.ESS2.A.1 Develop and use a model to illustrate that energy from the Earth’s interior drives convection which cycles
Earth’s crust leading to melting, crystallization, weathering and deformation of large rock formations, including generation of
ocean sea floor at ridges, submergence of ocean sea floor at trenches, mountain building and active volcanic chains.
Scoring Detail: Base score is 25 pts. Everything you do on the drawing earns you points. See the table above. Mastery would be an 80% or above. That would be 40 pts/50 pts.
