In this in class activity we used food to model the different types of plate boundaries and the geologic structures they form. You can always use the Plate Boundaries PowerPoint and Notes to review these.
LEARNING OBJECTIVE: Develop and use a model to illustrate that energy from the Earth’s interior drives convection which cycles Earth’s crust leading to melting, crystallization, weathering and deformation of large rock formations, including generation of ocean sea floor at ridges, submergence of ocean sea floor at trenches, mountain building and active volcanic chains.
I CAN…. make and draw a model of each type of plate boundary and explain the different geologic features and events that happen at each type.
MATERIALS LIST
If you are doing this activity at home you will need the following:
1. Download a copy of the following worksheet:
2. Pencil
3. 1 Fruit Rollup
4. Graham Crackers
5. Icing
6. Plastic Knife
7. Wax Paper
8. Tape.
Follow the attached instructions to make 4 models of different plate boundaries:
Fill out the worksheet as you go. Below is a graphic that should help you understand what to write in each of the columns. Then answer the questions on the second page.
