Engage – Cardboard Trees

Learning Standard: Develop models to describe the atomic composition of simple molecules and extended structures.

We started our Chemistry unit making some observations about a demonstration that was done in class. If you were unable to watch the demo you can watch the video below. In class we filled out the “Before” section of the Engaging in Chemistry: Cardboard Trees Worksheet.

Only watch the video to 1:54 for this part. As you watch the video do the following:

1. Fill out any materials you see being used in the video that aren’t already listed on your worksheet.

2. Write any Observations you make about what his happening while they are creating the tree and the mixture they use on it.

3. Draw a picture in the box to the right of what the tree looks like.

4. Fill out the Hypothesis with what you think will happen next.

Finish watching the rest of the video, then fill out the following in the “After” section of your worksheet.

1.  Write any Observations about what has happened to the cardboard tree.

2. Draw a picture of what the tree looks like now.

3. Write the result of the demonstration.

We will complete the summary later at the end of the learning standard.
